Frown lines – Before and After injectable facial muscle relaxants

A lovely aesthetic result after one treament with Dr Anita Hegde.

What is injectable wrinkle reduction treatment?

A more youthful and refreshed appearance. may be achieved by using wrinkle reducing injections. Wrinkles and creases are typically caused by the contraction of muscles in the affected areas. The solution used in anti-wrinkle injections contains a natural, purified protein extracted from a highly-diluted form of botulinum toxin.

Muscle relaxant injections were used for many years to treat conditions such as spasm/twitching of the eyelid, facial spasm, muscle spasticity due to cerebral palsy and eye squint. Their application to additional medical conditions is expanding continually.

How does it work?

The muscle relaxant temporarily blocks the chemical messengers that activate facial muscles responsible for wrinkling. This stops the muscles from contracting for several months and results in a smoother appearance to the skin. Because anti-wrinkle injections target only specific muscles, untreated facial expressions will not be affected. Reduced muscle contraction over time relaxes the overlying skin and reduces the appearance of wrinkles.

What does treatment involve?

Injectable wrinkle reduction is performed with a vey thin needls. It feels like a few quick stings and discomfort can be minimised with ice or anaesthetic cream. The entire procedure usually takes about 15 to 30 minutes to complete. Treatments are well tolerated. Three very slightly different forms of muscle relaxing injectables are currently available in Australia.

Who is a candidate?

Injectable wrinkle reduction can help patients who develop facial lines that appear only when they frown or squint, or it can be used to smooth out more prominent dynamic lines and wrinkles on the face. These can include crow’s feet, frown lines and creases along the forehead.

They also reduce muscle bulk at the corner of the jaw to refine and slim jaw lines, help teeth grinding (bruxism) and treat excess, underarm sweating.

What are the risks?

There is a small risk of short term redness, tenderness or bruising. since this can occur with any injectable treament.

Rare risks include temporary headache, nausea, flu-like syndrome, irregular smile with lower face or peri-oral injections, heavy brow or drooping eyelid which may last from days to weeks but always resolves.

Are there contraindications for wrinkle reduction treatment?

Pregnancy, planning conception within 3 months, breastfeeding and certain muscle or nerve disorders.

What can you expect after the treatment?

Results can be expected between 3-14 days after wrinkle reducing injectable.Sometimes some mild bruising or redness at the injection site may occur but this should fade easily within the next few days. The effects of injectable wrinkle reduction can last three months or more.  Maintenance with follow-up treatments every 3-4 month helps keep these results.
